Essay Competition


The Portland Homecoming Committee is inviting schools to participate in an Essay Competition which runs from March 26 - May 14 2001 under the theme:
" Why the grass is always greener in Portland ".

The competition heralds the beginning of Portland Homecoming Week of celebrations scheduled for June 24 to July 1, 2001.
The competition aims to:

(a) Encourage students to display their writing talents.

(b) Develop a sense of pride among Portlanders and specifically students at this level.

(c) Help students to aspire to high standards of literacy and creativity.


All entries should be sent to the Portland Homecoming Committee Secretariat, 3 West Baptist Avenue, Port Antonio, no later than 14 May 2001.

All winning essays will be displayed at the Buff Bay and Portland Parish Libraries, June 25 - 29 2001. There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed finalists. The teachers whose students are placed first will also receive prizes.

We encourage all students to participate in the competition.

Essay Competition Rules


1 The competition is open to students from age 13-18.

2 The competition is divided into two categories

Category 1: Ages 13-15
Category 2: Ages 16-18

3 All entries must be submitted through a school.

4 Essays submitted for: Category 1- should not exceed 250 words. Category 2- should not exceed 400 words.

5 The entry form provided, must accompany each Essay and should be the first title page. If the completed form is not submitted, the Essay is liable to be disqualified.

6 A student is allowed to submit one Essay (1) entry only.

7 Schools may submit a maximum of two (2) Essays, one in each category.

8 Essays should be in English, legible and if typed should be double-spaced.

9 The pages of the Essay should be clearly numbered.

10 Essays should be balanced in argument and analysis.

11 Competition runs from March 24 and continues through May 14 2001.

12 Entries should not be submitted later than May 14 2001.

13 Entries being awarded marks of 70 and above will qualify for the final places.

Internet Competition

There is also an internet competition which allows you to identify some spots within the parish.
